Our Mental Wellness is a lecture series that focuses on mental health topics of broad interest to staff, students and Mental Health logo image of head surrounded by colourful bubblesalumni. This third talk in the series, on the topic of Managing Depression and Low Mood, will be presented by Willem Kuyken, the Sir John Ritblat Family Foundation Professor of Mindfulness and Psychological Science.

A Q&A panel discussion will follow, chaired by Catharine Creswell (Professor of Developmental Clinical Psychology), and include:

About the talk:

Sadness and low mood are normal parts of human experience. But what happens when they become more pervasive and disabling? What is depression, and what happens when depression becomes crippling and recurrent? We know a lot about low mood and depression and how to help using psychological, pharmacological and social approaches.

In this talk you’ll learn more about depression, address stigma, explore strategies for working with depression and find out how to support others with depression. Finally, there will be a brief summary of available evidence-based treatments and how to access these treatments.

About the speaker:

Willem Kuyken's work focuses on depression and evidence-based approaches to depression. In particular, his research examines how cognitive-behavioural and mindfulness-based programmes can prevent depression and enhance human potential across the life span. His work spans the translational pathway from experimental work on mechanisms, effectiveness work (trials) through implementation.

About the Series:

We have come to realise the importance of mental health issues and the impact they can have on individuals as well as on society at large. But, can you separate the facts from the myths? Do you know how to promote your own mental wellness and help those around you?

At Oxford, we have some of the world’s leading researchers helping us understand the causes of mental conditions and develop effective evidence-based treatments. We are bringing them together in a new series – Our Mental Wellness – to share their knowledge and answer your questions about how we can look after each others’ mental wellness in our community.

Our Mental Wellness talks will take place twice per term.
