Research Summary

My research focuses on interethnic relations in secondary schools and sixth form colleges in ethnically diverse areas in England. I conduct micro-ecological observation studies of students' interethnic interactions, and longitudinal social network studies in schools where the majority of students are in an educational setting with the other ethnicity for the first time. This research aims to provide perspective on the extent to which young students will seek out contact with another ethnic group, when newly provided with the opportunity to do so; moreover, I aim to identify the conditions which support the formation of outgroup friends, and the long-term effects this can have on integration in adult life.
