Unilateral neglect may occur as a result of a lesion to the right cerebral hemisphere. It has been accounted for in terms of visual field defects or impaired sensation; it may also be considered to result from a loss of half of a spatial map within the brain. The most convincing account, however, appears to be that unilateral neglect results from a failure to attend automatically to anything which occurs on the left side of the patient. The attention explanation has particular implications for the rehabilitation of unilateral neglect.
