Our Mental Wellness is a lecture series that focuses on mental health topics of broad interest to staff, students and alumni. This sixth talk in the series, on the topic of Coping with Trauma, will be presented by Anke Ehlers, Professor of Experimental Psychopathology and Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow.
A Q&A panel discussion will follow, chaired by Cathy Creswell (Professor of Developmental Clinical Psychology), and include:
- Anke Ehlers
- Mina Fazel, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry
- Morten Kringelbach, Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow, Department of Psychiatry
About the talk:
Most of us will experience a traumatic event at some point in our lives, such as interpersonal violence, accidents, sudden death of a loved one, or disasters. Following trauma, we may experience unwanted distressing memories and feel a wide range of negative emotions. Our sense of self and the world may also change. This talk will discuss research findings on helpful and unhelpful ways of coping with trauma.
About the speaker:
Anke Ehlers’s research focuses on understanding and treating anxiety disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). With her colleagues, she has developed one of the leading treatments for PTSD.
About the Series:
We have come to realise the importance of mental health issues and the impact they can have on individuals as well as on society at large. But, can you separate the facts from the myths? Do you know how to promote your own mental wellness and help those around you?
At Oxford, we have some of the world’s leading researchers helping us understand the causes of mental conditions and develop effective evidence-based treatments. We are bringing them together in a new series – Our Mental Wellness – to share their knowledge and answer your questions about how we can look after each others’ mental wellness in our community.
Our Mental Wellness talks will take place twice per term.
Do you have a question you'd like to ask the panel?
When you register, you will be given the opportunity to submit a mental health question related to the topic of the talk for the panel to answer. Alternatively, please email your question to Halley Cohen (Public Relations Officer).
