CAMY Group

About

The CAMY research group works to better understand the psychological processes involved in common mental health difficulties in young people and to use this understanding to develop and implement developmentally sensitive, targeted interventions. Within this, we are also working to improve our understanding of the persistence of these difficulties in neurodivergent young people in order to develop better treatments.

Research Themes

Our work addresses the following interconnected aims:

  • Identify and understand cognitive and behavioural mechanisms associated with common mental health problems in young people
  • Examine developmental variation in these mechanisms across the adolescent spectrum
  • Develop valid, reliable and scalable measures of the mechanisms
  • Explore interactions between these mechanisms and environmental contexts, including peer, family, and educational settings
  • Understand if and how differences associated with neurodivergence relate to mechanisms and use this to inform treatment adaptations
  • Apply mechanistic insights to the development of effective interventions
  • Work with young people and families to ensure interventions are acceptable
  • Partner with services and organisations so we can implement interventions faithfully and at scale, with training and supervision materials and models

Methods

We believe that careful integration of mixed methods in therapy innovation and evaluation is a good way to enhance our understanding of mechanisms, acceptability, and implementation. To this end, our team use a range of methods, including qualitative studies, cross-sectional and longitudinal, experimental studies, clinical trials, and systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
