120 primary school children visited the department on Tuesday 18th March as part of an event we organised for Brain Awareness week. Two local schools sent two classes, each of which spent an hour with us learning about the brain and how we study it. They saw demonstrations of brain stimulation, EEG, eye-tracking, functional MRI scanning, and transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (which measures blood flow through the brain’s arteries). They also learnt how visual and auditory feedback are important for speech production, how the brains of animals differ, and played maths games. Everyone got to take home a brain hat and plasticine neurone (see pic). The enthusiasm of our visitors was infectious and great fun was had by all. Many thanks to everyone who helped make the day! We have some brain hats left over should anyone need one….
